Client: : Aurore, Pondicherry
Launched: 2004
Aurore is an NGO based in Pondicherry that has been working in the renewable energy space since 1984. Aurore aims to progressively introduce renewable energy technologies in India by interacting with product manufacturers, financial intermediaries, donor agencies and end-users.

Icarus partnered with Aurore in developing a hawkers lantern.

Aurore experimented with renting lanterns to hawkers who sell their wares on Besant Nagar beach, Chennai. A group of college students run this business after college hours. They charge the lanterns using solar panels during the daytime (while they are in college) and distribute the lanterns to hawkers in the evening. The lanterns are collected at night and the discharged lanterns reconnected to the solar panels for charging the next day. The lanterns are rented out for Rs.15-25 per day, lower than the running cost of a petromax lantern and minus the fumes, heat and fire hazard that this usual alternative poses.

The business model has been successful and extended to Marina beach too.

Pre-design the solar lanterns used had a plastic body that used to get damaged quite fast due to rough use. The new lantern has been designed in pressure die cast Aluminum so that it is strong enough to take rough use, yet is a reasonable weight.

The lantern can be used in an upright position as well as inverted so that it can be hung from the ceiling.
