Viscope 100 is a visual stethoscope, wherein, for the first time, heart sounds are displayed in a handheld device along with the traditional audio output of a stethoscope.
Viscope 100 allows the physician to see, hear and evaluate heart beats for cardiac treatment and aims to set a new standard in heart diagnostics by making it accessible, reliable and affordable.

The technology is based on algorithms that
 * extract pure heart sounds
 * eliminate environmental noise
 * detect anomalies in the sound (caused due to murmurs and regurgitation, septal defects, stenosis etc)
 * separates them
 * presents the real time graphical display of the sound, along with the raw heart sound
This allows the physician to quickly screen patients for cardiovascular problems, correctly identify the sounds and help in early detection of heart disease. It can be used as a preliminary diagnostic tool in small or remote towns and villages.

When Icarus was approached to design this product the process was undertaken enthusiastically as it was not everyday that a chance to revolutionize rural heath care in India presents itself.

User observations suggested that we needed to design the Viscope within the stereotype of finger positions adopted with the common  stethoscope. The form of the product was designed around that. In order of criticality of use the controls are Freeze, [display capture]Volume increase / decrease and Mode [ bell / dia ] The form allows all these controls to be easily  accessible without change in palm position and without obscuring the display.
The display has been ergonomically placed to maximize visibility without altering the finger positions.

The Viscope has been designed  to easily and comfortably fit a wide range of anthropometric palm  dimensions. The heaviest part of the device - the batteries have been placed at the rear so that the centre of gravity is within the palm.
